From NHIF to SHIF: How Kenya’s Health Contribution Change Hit July 2024 Payslips

18 Jul 2024 · Patrick Mwangi

Mid-2024 marked one of the most disruptive payroll changes in recent Kenyan history: NHIF’s fixed income bands gave way to SHIF, calculated as a share of gross pay with a minimum floor.

Why old calculators broke

Any system still using the classic NHIF table (KES 150, 300, 400… up to a capped amount) was wrong the moment SHIF went live. Employees noticed immediately when nets changed without a salary review.

How World Ledgers calculates SHIF

Our payroll engine applies 2.75% of gross, with a minimum of KES 300. The amount is stored on the payslip (historically under the NHIF field for continuity) and reduces taxable income before PAYE.

Practical checklist for HR

  • Confirm every active employee has SHIF enabled where required
  • Re-run a sample payroll for low earners (minimum floor) and high earners (percentage)
  • Update employee communication so staff understand the rename from NHIF to SHIF
  • Align remittance schedules with the new contribution rules

Estimate take-home with the Kenya PAYE calculator, then process full statutory payroll in HRM.
